FTIR

Characterisation of plastics via FTIR.

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) is a non-destructive micro-analytical spectroscopic technique, which studies the molecular vibrations within a material. This technique produces a unique spectrum, which is comparable to the fingerprint of the material. It is the fundamental analytical technique used to perform qualitative identification analysis in polymeric materials and plastics.

FTIR which is equipped with an attenuated total reflectance (ATR) attachment offers a fast, reliable, consistent, cost-effective and most importantly non-destructive analysis in plastics. The main polymer compound, additives (up to a certain level), polymer blends, water content, oxidation and degradation and chemical contact in the plastics can be easily identified in seconds using the FTIR.

In Impact Laboratories, we are equipped with a Thermo Nicolet is10, FTIR coupler with an ATR attachment. We can offer material analysis and identification results in a few seconds. In addition, Impact owns a large library of reference FTIR polymer spectra and can perform material comparisons in hundreds of polymer compounds.
