Honours Physics (1st) – Cardiff University
MSc Physics – Cardiff University
Les worked in the polymer industry for over 35 years. After completing an MSc in physics before joining BP Chemical’s R&D department based in South Wales focusing on polyethylene grade development. He moved with the R&D department to the main production site at Grangemouth in 1984. During his 13 years with BP Chemicals he specialised in understanding the molecular structure of polyethylene and its influence on polymer properties. He was closely involved in development of PE80 and early PE100 pipe grades for gas and water, and cross-linked LDPE insulation for medium voltage wire and cable systems.
He has written various papers on environmental stress cracking and electrical failure in wire and cable insulation.
In 2003 he left BP Chemicals to set up with his co-directors, Impact Laboratories as a UKAS test facility focusing on testing packages for UN approval , pipe and material testing and continues to work as a material consultant for the company.
He is a member of the Institute of Physics and Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and has recently been awarded a Fellowship for the later.
Since coming to Scotland Les has been closely involved with the Scottish Plastics and Rubber Association and is a past president and still active with them.
